Attendance Policy

Attendance policy

By accepting a place with Newcastle City Learning learners agree to the following regarding attendance:

  • Learners must attend all the lessons which make up their programme of study.  Learners won’t receive their travel fare claim payment for the sessions that they miss.

  • Young learners attending the study programme which is part of compulsory education at ages 16 – 19, must attend regularly in the first six weeks of their programme to demonstrate a commitment to full-time education post-16.

  • Learners must register at every lesson. Learners should familiarise themselves with their learning programme timetable. Learners are responsible for engaging and attending all aspects of their programme.  Attendance is monitored daily.  Registration will be taken at each lesson to provide evidence that learners are on time, are engaging well, and progressing on their programme of learning.  Any learner arriving 5 minutes late for a session will be marked as being late in the register. After 15 minutes Programmes for Young People/BUILD learner and their parent/carer/guardian will be contacted if they have not arrived.

  • Good attendance is essential if learners are to succeed in the job market or progress to higher education. Most employers and further education providers require NCL to comment on attendance in references. Where attendance is unsatisfactory, it is our duty to report this truthfully and honestly.

  • Remember employers look for people who are on time and can be relied upon to turn up regularly.

Authorised and unauthorised absence

In some cases, NCL will consider an absence to be authorised.  In these instances tutors will provide learners with an alternative way of completing the learning and work for the session the learners has missed in order to not disrupt their learning and progress.

Planned absence

If learners know that they are going to be absent or late, they should apply for “authorised absence/lateness‟ at least 2 days before that date. For example, they could gain authorised absence for a hospital appointment.

Programmes for Young People/BUILD learners must complete the absence request form available from Pastoral Support Officers, and get it signed by a member of NCL staff and return this to their Pastoral Support Officer. Adult learners must advise their tutor.

If learners know that they need to be away, but do not don’t apply for an authorised absence and they miss one of their classes, we will always assume they don’t have permission to be away, and the absence will be marked down as unauthorised.

Unplanned absence

If learners are ever away for a reason that couldn’t have been predicted, NCL will consider whether the absence was really unavoidable - but learners must let us know on the day they are away before 9am.

Learners need to phone NCL on Telephone number 0191 277 3506.  Unless learners have a really good reason why they can’t contact us on the day, they will be considered as an unauthorized absence

(If the learner is under 18 years of age this should be confirmed with their parent/carer/guardian)
