Health and Safety

We operate a strict no smoking / vaping / alcohol / drugs policy across all of our centres.

Newcastle City Council and Newcastle City Learning have a commitment to health and safety. Policies are available at the Council's website. At your induction you will be given information on first aid facilities on site.
Good health and safety practice is everyone’s responsibility. You should be aware of your own safety, and also the safety of others, whilst in our centres. We hope that you will help us achieve high standards of health and safety.

Fire safety and evacuation procedures

Fire exits are clearly marked and are located throughout our centres. Please familiarise yourselves with their location. Fire drills are held periodically at centres. At your induction you will be given details of the fire evacuation procedure. If you need additional support to evacuate we will work with you to put a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) in place. Please speak to your tutor or manager if you have any concerns.

On other occasions it may be necessary to either evacuate the building or to remain in the building in the event of an incident. We have plans in place so if this happens please follow the instructions from our staff, and be assured that your safety is our priority.

Face Coverings and Social Distancing

All personnel (staff, learners, and visitors) are required to wear face coverings whilst in communal areas at our sites. They are not required in classrooms where other measures are in place. (September 2020)

Newcastle City Learning follow Government and Newcastle City Council guidelines on social distancing. We expect all of our learners to adhere to social distancing rules which may include using one-way systems, washing your hands more frequently and using hand sanitiser. The number of desks in rooms may also be limited to maintain physical distancing for the benefit of our staff and learners so please do not move furniture unless instructed.

Please do not attend your class if you have symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19) and follow the instructions from the NHS and Public Health England.

We have social distancing leads to coordinate measures for our buildings:

Westgate College – julie.hickin@newcastle.gov.uk

Heaton Centre – lizzie.mott@newcastle.gov.uk

They are aided by social distancing champions, who will be proactive about reminding staff and learners about the social distancing measures in place.
