Modern Foreign Language courses
Now that we can travel again, do you want to learn a new language or brush up your skills? We are offering a range of courses from September across the city. Venues include Westgate College, Gosforth Library, Heaton Centre and Great Park Community Centre. Courses run daytimes and evenings. There are opportunities to learn online too via Zoom and Google classroom links. You can learn Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian (online only) and Japanese (online only). For something a bit different, try our Get Started with Italian through Cooking course.
Ask us about flexible learning – you can try a taster session of many of our longer courses by arrangement if you don’t want to commit to a full term.
If you find it difficult to travel to college each week, why not try our blended learning Get Started with Spanish at Westgate on Monday evenings – you can join in person or log into the session from home.
Contact email@example.com to find out more.
As you become competent with the language, you can progress from entry level to level 2 awards in reading, writing, speaking and listening. This is subject to viable class sizes.
You will learn the functional language essential for travelling in the relevant country, and at the higher levels, you will be able to discuss current affairs and cultural matters. Whatever your mode of learning, the online classroom also gives you the opportunity to access course resources in between classroom sessions.
We have courses to suit all levels of ability and they could be free if you meet the eligibility criteria.
Full cost courses
At the higher levels, we offer classes at full cost. These courses have a higher tuition fee and are not subject to fee remission. Topics to be covered are negotiated with each group and the aim is to develop fluency in the language. Some of our higher-level Spanish and German classes also offer the opportunity to join online.
How do I know what is the right level for me?
If the course is at entry level, then it will be aimed at those with little or no knowledge of the language. A level 1 course will be suitable if you have some knowledge. For any courses above beginner level, you should seek advice and guidance if you have not previously studied with us.
Creative Writing courses
If you are new to creative writing, you need our Get Started with Creative Writing course. Ask us about flexible learning – you can try a taster session or a short part of the course by arrangement if you don’t want to commit to a full term. The same applies if you are interested in the Learn to Write Film Screenplay course.
There are also some short workshops focussing on different aspects of creative writing –
